CIP CODE: 24.0101

AWARD: Associate of Arts & Sciences

LENGTH: 2 Years

Purpose:

This program prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a degree that leads to teacher certification. It provides students with the course work and skills needed to pursue further study in education, leading to jobs in teaching at a variety of grade levels.

Admissions Requirements:

Individuals are eligible for admission to CVCC if they are high school graduates or the equivalent, or if they are eighteen years of age or older and able to benefit academically from study at the community college, as demonstrated by assessment in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Program Requirements:

Students who wish to be licensed to teach in Virginia should consult with a counselor regarding appropriate elective choices to match their desired teaching endorsement area(s). While enrolled at the community college, students should prepare for and successfully complete the Praxis I Test – the initial teacher licensure exam – before transfer. It is strongly recommended that students visit Counseling for more information on the Praxis I Test and teacher licensure requirements.
All students are expected to complete the requirements for a degree, diploma or certificate must complete an Application for Graduation.

Courses:

The Program Pathway for Education AA&S is a tool for students that lists the following items:

  • The recommended order in which to take the program courses
  • Suggested course when more than one option exists
  • If the course has a prerequisite
  • Courses that may lead to a certificate (if offered in the program)

Students who plan to transfer should consult an academic counselor to verify specific program requirements with their intended four-year institution. While an elective course may satisfy a requirement for a Central Virginia Community College program, it may not fulfill a requirement at a four-year institution.
