LENGTH: 2 Years - Transfer

Purpose:

The Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in General Studies prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university. 

Admissions Requirements:

Individuals are eligible for admission to CVCC if they are high school graduates or the equivalent, or if they are eighteen years of age or older and able to benefit academically from study at the community college, as demonstrated by assessment in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Program Requirements:

  • All students expected to complete the requirements for a degree, diploma, certificate, or career studies certificate must complete an Application for Graduation.
  • Access to a computer that meets or exceeds the PC Specifications for Non-Technical Programs.

Courses:

The Program Pathway for General Studies- Health Sciences Focus AAS is a resource for students that lists the following items:

  • The recommended order in which to take the program courses
  • Suggested course when more than one option exists
  • If the course has a prerequisite
  • Courses that may lead to a certificate (if offered in the program)

Students who plan to transfer should consult an academic counselor to verify specific program requirements with their intended four-year institution. While an elective course may satisfy a requirement for a Central Virginia Community College program, it may not fulfill a requirement at a four-year institution.

Social Science electives should be selected based on the student’s desired transfer institution. Dual enrolled students will enroll in PLS PLS 135  -PLS 136  .

BIO 141 has a developmental course prerequisite of NAS 2  . Students can take NAS 2, take the NAS 2 challenge exam, or take BIO 101   See your counselor for details. Dual enrollment students should talk to their high school guidance office or program director.  

Degree-seeking students should complete a HIS elective for this Social Science elective. 

Students must complete 3 credits from one of the three areas but may not be from the same area as course #11.  Students who choose a Literature Elective must have completed ENG 112   prior to enrollment

5 Math electives should be selected based on the student’s desired transfer institution.  MTH 111  , MTH 130  , or MTH 131   cannot be used to fulfill this requirement

6 Students who have not completed a HIS elective for one of the Social Sciences courses must do so to fulfill degree requirements

Students should confer with their intended transfer institution to determine appropriate transfer electives
