LENGTH: Less than 1 Year

Purpose:

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Career Studies Certificate prepares students for entry-level certification as an EMT. This program provides the essential knowledge, utilizing a flipped classroom design, and hands-on skills needed to deliver emergency care in pre-hospital settings. Students will complete clinical experiences at local hospitals and/or EMS Agencies.

This program is ideal for individuals beginning their career in EMS or those seeking foundational pre-hospital care training before advancing into AEMT or Paramedic education.

This program is accredited by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services and offers both day and evening class options.
 

Courses in this certificate may be applied toward the Emergency Medical Services - Paramedic Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree.

Note: The EMT Career Studies Certificate alone is not eligible for federal financial aid. Students interested in financial assistance should consult an academic advisor. This program is G3 Eligible.

Upon successful completion of all EMT coursework, clinical requirements, and both the psychomotor and cognitive capstone exams, students will be eligible to take the National Registry EMT (NREMT) certification exam.

 

Admissions Requirements:

Applicants must meet the minimum standards established by the Virginia Office of EMS and Central Virginia Community College.

Must be at least 16 years of age.

Students under age 18 must have parent or guardian consent

A high school diploma or GED is not required for admission.

Students may not have been convicted of any disqualifying crime as mandated by the Virginia Office of EMS.

Additional requirements may include health screenings, immunizations, drug screening, and other testing as required by clinical affiliates.

Program Requirements:

To successfully complete the EMT Career Studies Certificate, students must:

Complete all required courses in the program pathway.

Meet clinical and skills competency requirements as outlined by the Virginia Office of EMS.

Maintain compliance with program policies, including attendance and professional conduct standards.

Submit an Application for Graduation during the final semester of coursework.

Students should consult the program advisor for guidance on prerequisites, course sequencing, and certification testing.

Students should use the chart below as a planning guide to stay on track toward successful capstone completion and eligibility for the National Registry EMT (NREMT) exam. Students are encouraged to review the pathway and meet with an EMS program advisor early to plan semester schedules and ensure timely progression. Clinical documentation requirements, including immunizations, background checks, and onboarding, must be completed before clinical placement.
